So finally it came, the long awaited 24 hour, Thailand - endurance race. A total of 23 teams from all over the world would be competing in this large event at the sparkling new Bira Race Circuit outside Pattaya. Pre race practice and qualifying saw nothing but nice whether, although in the middle of the rainy season in Thailand. Those that had their hopes up for nice and cozy kart racing into the sunset soon found these hopes drenched in a deluge of rain. The race started somewhat delayed at 13:30 on Saturday after an exiting Le Mans type start with the pilots spurting across the track to their karts.
It was immediately evident that the organizers plan not to have any weight limitations, hugely rewarded the lighter teams and they quickly disappeared off in the horizon. For the majority of the teams any hopes of racing for a podium finish was consequently dashed and it was down to fighting for position amongst equally weighted teams. Hopefully the organizers will carefully consider the minimum weight issue for future events.
By early evening the rain had already started and soon the karts were skidding around the track on their slick tires, the competition uninterrupted. There were several shows going on during the race, with World Cup matches also being shown on the stage big screen. By midnight the rain gods decided to show who really was in charge and the race had to be stopped due to flooding on the track. The race was then postponed until 5 AM, by when the rain was down to drizzle. The race then got underway again, but rain came and went throughout the morning. Team Random Racing eventually secured the win with Speedzone in second and Benefica Portugal in third.
